Understanding eBike Classes: Which One Is Right for You?

Not all electric bikes are the same. Some are designed for casual riding, others for commuting, and some for high-speed off-road adventures.

Before choosing an eBike, it's important to understand the different classes, how they work, and where you can legally ride them.

The Three Main eBike Classes

Most states recognize three classes of electric bicycles.

Class 1: Pedal Assist (20 MPH)

  • Motor only works while pedaling

  • Maximum assisted speed of 20 mph

  • No throttle

  • Generally allowed on roads and many bike paths

Best for: Recreational riding, exercise, and bike trails.

Class 2: Pedal Assist + Throttle (20 MPH)

  • Motor works while pedaling or using a throttle

  • Maximum motor-assisted speed of 20 mph

  • Can ride without pedaling

  • Generally allowed wherever Class 1 eBikes are permitted

Best for: Everyday riding, commuting, and riders who want the convenience of a throttle.

Class 3: High-Speed Pedal Assist (28 MPH)

  • Motor assists pedaling up to 28 mph

  • Typically no throttle under Colorado's Class 3 definition

  • Designed for faster commuting

  • May have additional restrictions on bike paths and trails

Best for: Longer commutes and riders looking for extra speed.

What About More Powerful Electric Bikes?

Some electric bikes fall outside the standard three-class system.

Electric Dirt Bikes

Electric dirt bikes are designed for off-road riding. They typically feature powerful motors, throttle control, and higher top speeds.

These bikes are generally not permitted on public roads or bicycle paths unless they meet applicable vehicle requirements.

Best for: Off-road adventures and approved riding areas.

Electric Mopeds

Electric mopeds offer more power than standard eBikes and may require registration, insurance, and a driver's license, depending on local laws.

Best for: Street commuting without pedaling.

Electric Motorcycles

Electric motorcycles offer motorcycle-level power and performance. They require the appropriate licensing, registration, and insurance for street use.

Best for: High-speed road riding and motorcycle enthusiasts.

Quick eBike Class Comparison

Type Motor Assistance Maximum Assisted Speed
Class 1 Pedal assist 20 mph
Class 2 Pedal assist + throttle 20 mph
Class 3 Pedal assist 28 mph
Electric Dirt Bike Usually throttle Varies
Electric Moped Usually throttle Varies
Electric Motorcycle Throttle Varies

Can You Change Your eBike's Class?

Some electric bike systems allow riders to adjust speed limits, throttle settings, or riding modes.

Depending on the motor system and local regulations, these settings may allow a compatible eBike to operate within different class limits.

However, changing a setting doesn't automatically make an eBike legally compliant. Motor power, equipment, labeling, and local laws still apply.

Where Can You Ride?

eBike regulations vary by state, city, and trail system.

In general:

  • Class 1 and 2: Allowed on many roads and bike paths.

  • Class 3: Commonly allowed on roads, with additional path restrictions.

  • Electric dirt bikes: Restricted to approved off-road areas or private property.

  • Electric mopeds and motorcycles: Must meet applicable road-use requirements.

Always check local regulations and posted trail signs before riding.
