BATTERY SAFETY 101

BATTERY SAFETY 101

Factors that have a positive impact on overall battery life + heath:

  • Keep the battery between 20-90% as often as possible
  • Storage at optimal temps (33°F – 86°F)
  • Long term storage between: 40% – 60% charge

Factors that have a negative impact on overall battery life + heath:

  • Heavy duty use: high demand on system when battery is less than 20%. Constant high throttle with high powered motors.
  • Charging outside of optimal temperatures: below 32°F and above 87°F will affect your battery health
  • Prolonged storage charge in a completely empty OR full state of charge.

Charging Details

  • Charging time will depend on the battery and output of the charger as well as how much energy has been used.
  • Most batteries take around 5-8 hours for a full charge (1-6 for partial charges).
  • It is recommended to plug the charger into the battery before plugging into the wall.
  • Some bike displays show the remaining amount of bars rather than the battery percentage. Some bikes have both. Please use approx. 1 hour of charging for each 20%  (for each bar)

FAQS

Expected lifetime + Range?

Lifetime: 500-1,000 charge cycles before cell degradation.
Complete discharge and recharge = 1 charge cycle or several partial charges.
Charging or storing at empty or full charge degrades your battery quickly. It can die over a cold winter if left empty.
Range: The more your pedal, the more range you'll get out of your battery. We tend make recommendations based on WATT HOURS on the battery. A simple estimate is 500wh = 5 hrs @ 100w, 1 hr @ 500w. You can calculate watt hours by multiplying voltage x amp hours. 52v 10ah = 520wh.

What are the best battery safety practices?

Purchase UL Batteries from trusted retailers.
Charge with a professionally recommended charger.
Do not MIX / MATCH voltages. Make sure your voltage matches.

36v = 42v MAX
48v = 54.6v MAX
52v = 58.8v MAX
72v = 84v MAX

Only charge on hard/cool surfaces. Concrete, Tile, Etc. No rugs, blankets, towels. Give charger ample space for cooling fans. Do not stack on top of it.

For extra safety, use an outlet timer or smart charger to set an ending percentage of 80/90/100%.

Can I leave my battery charging overnight?

It's safer to avoid charging when you’re asleep, away from the house, or in super high or super low temps.
